Strasbourg – Top 5 Things to See and Do

In this blogpost we are visiting Strasbourg in France.
Strasbourg is located in the very eastern parts France, close to the border of Germany. It’s renowned for its blend of French and German influences. We flew here from Barcelona on a direct flight with Easyjet.

We focus the list in The historic center of Strasbourg, called Le Grande Île. It was namned a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988 with the motivation “an old quarter that exemplifies medieval cities”. Strasbourg was the first city to have its entire city center be listed as a World Heritage Site.

The Grande Île, features charming half-timbered houses, cobblestone streets, and the awe-inspiring Gothic Strasbourg Cathedral. The city is also a hub for European institutions like the European Parliament. Stroll along the canals in the picturesque Petite France district.

1. Place Kléber

Number one on the list is Place Kleber. It’s the city’s largest square and a vibrant hub for locals and visitors. Surrounded by historic buildings and shops, it hosts events, markets, and a stunning Christmas tree during the holiday season, making it a lively and iconic spot all year around.

Strasbourg Cathedral, or Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Strasbourg, is a stunning Gothic masterpiece. Completed in 1439, it features intricate stonework, a towering spire (142 meters), and a remarkable astronomical clock. Its magnificent rose window and breathtaking views from the platform attract visitors worldwide, showcasing its historical, artistic, and architectural significance.

The Astronomical Clock is a result of the combined work of artists, mathematicians and technicians. Swiss clockmakers, sculptors, painters and automaton designers all worked together to produce this superb attraction. The current mechanism dates from 1842.

3. Kammerzell House – Strasbourg

The Kammerzell House, one of Strasbourg’s architectural gems, stands near the Strasbourg Cathedral. Built in 1427, this half-timbered masterpiece blends Gothic and Renaissance styles, featuring intricately carved wooden façades and striking frescoes by artist Léo Schnug. Originally a merchant’s house, it later became a hub of commerce and culture. Today, it serves as a renowned restaurant, inviting visitors to dine amidst its historical ambiance. The Kammerzell House embodies Strasbourg’s rich heritage, making it a must-see for history and architecture enthusiasts. The windows are made of Crown glass. A method of making windows that was perfected by french window-makers already in the 14th century.

4. Place Broglie

Place Broglie is one of Strasbourg’s oldest and most iconic squares, blending historical charm with modern activity. Located in the city’s heart, it has long been a center for political and cultural life. The square features elegant 18th-century buildings, including the City Hall and the Prefecture, reflecting Strasbourg’s rich architectural heritage. During December, it transforms into a festive hub, hosting part of the renowned Strasbourg Christmas Market. Place Broglie’s timeless beauty and vibrant atmosphere make it a favorite destination for locals and visitors alike.

5. Petit France

La Petite France, a picturesque district in Strasbourg, is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its enchanting charm. Located on the Grand Île, it features cobblestone streets, half-timbered houses with flower-filled balconies, and winding canals once used by tanners, fishermen, and millers. Highlights include the Ponts Couverts and the Vauban Dam, offering stunning views of the area. This historic quarter captivates visitors with its timeless beauty, blending Alsatian heritage, quaint architecture, and a vibrant atmosphere perfect for exploration.
