Rental cars (be aware!)

In this blog-post we will list our top 5 favourite beaches in Crete. They are all located within 2 hours of the city of Chania, Crete. You will need a car or take a boat-trip to reach some of them. Rental cars are available from the airport or Chania town. I would recommend to take plenty of pictures or video of your rental car when you get it, as some of the rental car companies claim the smallest scratch as a damage, even if it’s not new. A zero-deductible insurance can be a good idea. We had a bad experience with Goldcar. They found a 3cm scratch basically under the front bumper and claimed that we had caused it. Basically impossible to prove that we did not create it and they wanted €300 for it. Ridiculous. I would stay away from Goldcar. I would recommend Sixt, Hertz, Avis or Budget instead.

1. Gramvousa Beach (Boat-trip)

Nestled on the northwest coast, Gramvousa Beach boasts turquoise waters and powdery golden sands. The beach’s untouched charm is enhanced by the rugged cliffs and the enchanting Gramvousa Island standing tall in the distance. Visitors can indulge in a range of activities, from sunbathing and swimming in the crystal-clear waters to exploring the ancient ruins nearby. Gramvousa Beach is a true gem, where nature’s splendor and tranquility create an unforgettable coastal experience.
You can only reach Gramvousa Beach by boat as it is located on a small island. We took a boat-trip that departed from Kissamos. It’s a 40-50 minutes drive from Chania. There are also tours that will take you to Kissamos and this boat-trip. The cost for the boat-trip is €29 without lunch and €39 with lunch.

Daily departures from the port of Kissamos from 10.10 to 12.40. Return to the port of Kissamos from 17.45 to 19.40 (depending on departure time).

More information about the boat-trip is available here: https://www.cretandailycruises.com/explorecruises/gramvousabalos/tour/onedaycruise.en.html

2. Balos Beach (boat-trip)

Our main and final stop with the boat-trip was Balos Beach. You can also reach Balos Beach by car, but it is a really long rough unpaved road to get there. I would recommend taking the boat cruise instead.

Balos Beach, is a coastal haven that captures the essence of paradise. Tucked away on the northwestern coast, it is celebrated for its awe-inspiring beauty. The beach is a mesmerizing blend of turquoise waters, soft white sands, and rugged landscapes. Its iconic feature, the lagoon, showcases a palette of vivid blues, creating a postcard-perfect scene. Accessible by boat or a scenic hike, Balos Beach offers a tranquil escape for nature enthusiasts and sun-seekers alike. With its pristine shores, dramatic cliffs, and breathtaking vistas, Balos Beach is a must-visit destination when visiting Crete.

Keep in mind that it can get very windy at Balos Beach, so check the forecast before you go!

3. Falassarna Beach

Located on the western coast of the island, it’s a larger beach with fine golden sand. You reach Falassarna with car or bus. It’s easy to access and does not require any difficult driving.
The beach is known for its impressive sand dunes and dramatic cliffs, creating a picturesque backdrop. Visitors can relax under umbrellas, swim in the refreshing sea, or simply unwind on the pristine shoreline. If you are looking for some fun waves to swim in, Falassarna Beach has it.

4. Stavros Beach

Stavros Beach is located about half an hour drive from Chania. It’s easy to access and does not require any difficult driving.

Stavros Beach, located on the Akrotiri Peninsula in Crete, is a slice of coastal paradise that enchants visitors with its natural beauty. Renowned for its stunning crescent shape and azure waters, Stavros Beach gained fame as the backdrop for the iconic dance scene in the movie “Zorba the Greek.” The beach offers a serene and family-friendly environment, with its calm waters perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Surrounded by dramatic cliffs, Stavros Beach provides a picturesque setting for relaxation and sunbathing. Its nearby taverns serve delicious seafood, allowing visitors to savor traditional Cretan flavors while enjoying the breathtaking views. Stavros Beach is a true gem of Crete’s coastline.

5. Seitan Limania (our favorite)

The final beach in our Top 5 Beaches of Crete is Seitan Limania is located about a 40 minutes drive from Chania. Seitan Limania, also known as Stefanou Beach, is a hidden gem tucked away on the Akrotiri Peninsula in Crete. The drive is on a smaller winding road but it’s paved and relatively easy to access.

This secluded cove mesmerizes visitors with its rugged cliffs, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and dramatic landscape. Accessible through a steep path, the beach offers a sense of tranquility and seclusion, making it an ideal escape from the bustling crowds. Seitan Limania is a paradise for nature lovers and adventure seekers, with opportunities for swimming, snorkeling, and cliff jumping. Surrounded by breathtaking views of the sea and cliffs, this hidden beach is a true gem waiting to be discovered by those who seek a unique and unforgettable experience in Crete.

Keep in mind that it’s a quite challenging steep path to access this beach. Wear proper shoes and bring water.

If you are lucky you might get a visit from some curious goats. Their climbing skills are truly impressive.
