In this blogpost we will name the Top 5 Places to see in Lipsi. A YouTube video is available at the bottom of the page.
Lipsi is a serene and picturesque Greek island nestled in the Aegean Sea between Samos in the North and Leros in the South. We took a ferry here from the island of Kos which is well connected with the rest of Europe in the summertime, thanks to it’s international airport.
With its unspoiled beauty and laid-back atmosphere, Lipsi offers a tranquil escape for those seeking relaxation and a true Greek island experience. The island is characterized by its charming whitewashed houses, cobblestone streets, and stunning beaches with crystal-clear turquoise waters. Lipsi’s small size contributes to its intimate and peaceful ambiance, making it an ideal destination for a peaceful getaway. Visitors can immerse themselves in the local culture, savour fresh seafood, explore secluded coves, and bask in the tranquillity of this hidden gem which is part of the Dodecanese islands.
We stayed in a small hotel called Studio Filoxenia located in Lipsi Town. To move around on the island we rented a scooter from George MotorRent. It was only 10 euros per day. They also have great new electric bicycles with a battery that lasts for 2 days. Thanks to George for great service.
Here is our Lipsi Top 5 list:
1. Platis Gialos Beach
Platis Gialos is a stunning sandy beach in Lipsi, known for its crystal-clear turquoise waters and peaceful atmosphere. Relax on the soft sand, swim in the refreshing sea, and soak up the tranquil surroundings.
To reach this beach, a short 10-minute drive is all it takes. Alternatively, you can embark on a leisurely stroll from Lipsi Town, which will take approximately 30-40 minutes, depending on your walking pace.
Undoubtedly the most awe-inspiring beach on the island, Platis Gialos also features a charming taverna where you can savor delectable local Greek cuisine and beverages.
2. The Churches of Lipsi
Lipsi has around 700 inhabitants and a staggering number of over 50 churches. A local woman told us that almost every family has its own church. That is quite remarkable.
The most famous church is the Monastery of Panagia tou Harou. Located on a hill overlooking the island, the Monastery of Panagia tou Harou is a significant religious site in Lipsi. Visit the monastery to admire its beautiful architecture, enjoy panoramic views, and experience a sense of serenity. Most of the churches are painted white with blue details.
3. Lipsi Town
Explore the charming Lipsi Town, the main settlement of the island. Stroll through its narrow streets, discover traditional whitewashed houses, and visit local shops and tavernas, where you can taste authentic Greek cuisine and immerse yourself in the island’s laid-back atmosphere.
We visited the local bakery where the owner talked to us and showed us all of their delicacies. She is using a wood-fired oven and baking using her old traditional recipes.
Later we stopped for a drink at Angela’s Café and Cocktail Bar. The wine was great and so was the views of the port and town. A great place for a drink, highly recommended.
4. Ouzeri Asprakis
As number 4 on our Lipsi Top 6, we have Ouzeri Asprakis. A great traditional restaurant in the cosy harbour area of Lipsi Town. An Ouzeri is a type of Greek Tavern that serves the Greek liquor Ouzo and meze, small plates of delicious food.
We enjoyed our evening at Ouzeri Asprakis with great food and drinks. All very reasonably priced. The restaurant had a busy evening. We had a dakos salad, some amazing grilled mushrooms and ouzo-flavoured prawns. We also got a taste of the local fresh grilled octopus. The seafood is cooked on charcoals just outside the restaurant. Thanks to the chefs and waiters for great food and service.
5. Hohlakoura Beach
Finally as number 5 on our Lipsi Top 5, we have Hohlakoura Beach. Hohlakoura is a secluded beach located on the eastern side of Lipsi. Accessible by car or motorbike and a short walk, this beach offers a serene and peaceful setting surrounded by impressive cliffs and pristine waters.
Note, there is no taverna or food service on this beach.
The main beach is a larger pebbly beach and if you continue walking to the right you will get to a hidden small sandy beach with a spectacular smaller cave.
