In this blogpost we are travelling in Business Class with Iberia (iberia.com) on their long haul flight from Madrid in Spain to Bogotá in Colombia. Come along on the journey where I show you the Madrid Airport check-in, lounge, flight with meals and drinks. Make sure to stay to the end for my honest review of this 10 hours business class flight.

Flight details mad-bog

This is a intercontinental flight of around 8000 km with an estimated flight time of around 10 hours and 20 minutes. We choose the lunch flight, departing Madrid at 12.05pm.

All Iberia flights have their check-in at Terminal 4. There is a dedicated Business Class Check-in and bag drop. Two check-in bags of 23kg each are included.

The check-in went smooth and we were shown where the fast track security was located, which was very close by the business class check-in. Security and passport control were quick and efficient. Non-schengen flights operate out of terminal 4S at Madrid Barajas Airport, so you have to take an underground train that connects terminal 4 with terminal 4S. This will take you some time (roughly 15-20 minutes) so keep that in mind. See map below.

The Iberia Lounge is located inside the duty free in terminal 4S, on the left side if you come from the passport control.

For who: Iberia Business Class passengers, Iberia Plus Gold/Platinum, Oneworld elites, and some lounge membership cards.

What’s inside: Snacks, food & beverages, newspapers/magazines, Wi-Fi, TVs, business area, decent seating. Showers usually not available here.

Hours: ~06:00 – 01:00 daily, except Sundays 05:00 – 12:00.

aircraft

As a business class passenger you get to board first. Iberia operates a fleet of Airbus A330 and A350 aircraft on their longhaul routes. Today we are flying on a Airbus A350-941 from 2019, registration EC-NBE. We choose seat 3E and 3G, which are so called honeymoon seats, where you sit next to each other.

In our aircraft there were 31 seats in Business Class, with a 1-2-1 configuration of eight rows. If you fly an aircraft newer than December 2022 it will have the newer next generation interior and seats. A new door offers a more private and exclusive personal space as seen here. There is also a 4K screen with Bluetooth connectivity. Otherwise the seats are similar and the older seats are actually a bit wider.

Let’s take a look at the screen. It’s a 15.4” HD touch screen with good brightness. It offers plenty of movies, series, games and flight info. Noice cancelling headphones are provided and they run of the aircraft power supply.

meal service

One of the perks with Business Class is the great food and service. To start of we were served a glass of Cava (or choice of drink) together with some almonds and cheese. I really appreciate that they give you a paper-menu, printed on a nice paper, fresh and clean. The food is served on nice porcelain and you get proper cutlery and glasses.

As a starter we both choose the smoked salmon. For the main we had a choice of three options as seen below. We went with the sea bream and slow-braised veal shank. The dessert we tried was the ice-cream with mango. All in all, the food was quite good. Maybe I expected a slightly higher quality of food.

onboard wifi

There is wifi onboard and as a business class passenger, you get complimentary wifi for messaging only. If you want a higher speed connection for streaming videos and browsing you need to pay. It costed €20.49 for the whole flight and worked very well.

my honest review of iberia business class

Our flight experience did not start well. We got to the gate 45 minutes before departure and waited for around 40 minutes when they suddenly announced that the flight was delayed indefinitely and there would be an update in 30 minutes. It was not explained was the issue was, just that there was going to be a delay. As we had still access to the lounge, we decided to go back there and wait.

I spoke with the receptionist in the lounge and she double checked on the flight and said that there will be a delay of at least an hour. I asked if she could keep and eye on the flight and call us when the boarding started. She agreed to this. In the meantime, I used the Madrid-Barajas Airport app to sign up for flight alerts on our flight. After about 45 minutes I check the app and it shows “Boarding in Progress” and “Gate closing”. The receptionist in the lounge did not announce anything and the screens in the lounge showed a conflicting message of “Delayed”. We had to run back to the gate and when we got there, the business class passengers had already boarding.

When we got onboard we had no further issues and were welcomed by the crew that provided a great service throughout the flight. Seats were comfortable, the aircraft was well cleaned, the forward cabin of the A350 is very quiet and the food was quite good. I believe in some of the middle-east companies the quality of the business class food is one step higher. The wifi works great, you can stream Youtube or Netflix with ease.
