Kastro Skiathos

Kastro is a historic and scenic site on the northern tip of Skiathos island, Greece. It served as the island’s medieval capital from the 14th to the 19th century, built high on a rocky cliff for protection against pirate attacks.

Surrounded by dramatic cliffs and stunning sea views, Kastro once held over 300 houses and 20 churches, though today only a few restored buildings remain, including the Church of Christ and a small fortress gate. You’ll also find a tiny museum, cannons, and ruins that whisper stories of past island life.

6. Evangelistria monastery

Evangelistria monastery

The monastery was founded in 1794 by a group of Kollyvades monks, who had left the monastery of Mount Athos after disagreements about matters of Christian ritual. They were led by an ordained monk, Niphon of Chios, and included Gregorios Hatzistamatis, a local monk who had inherited land on Skiathos from his father. In 1807, a group of Greek freedom fighters met at the monastery and swore the Oath of Freedom on a newly designed Greek flag, a white cross on a sky-blue background, which was woven on a loom at the site. The fighters included Theodoros Kolokotronis, Andreas Vokos Miaoulis, Thymios Vlachavas, Nikotsaras and others.

Here you will also find a great café and the most beautiful and relaxing athmosphere on the island.
